Believe it or not, designers are predicting that these living room trends will disappear in a matter of a few years! This means that if you have recently decorated, you might regret it pretty soon if you’ve made the wrong decision.

We know very well that when it comes to decorating, it is extremely easy to get caught up in the latest trends, but this can sometimes be a huge mistake. Not all the trends that appear are stylish and will remain a staple, and this is how many of us decide to choose some living room trends that will be long gone in just a couple of years.

This might not sound like a problem at first, but if you think about it, are you willing to redecorate your living room every year? Probably not, and this is why it is essential to be careful and choose your trends wisely.

In this article, designers share some living room trends they predict will soon lose their fame. Read on and discover what to steer clear of if you plan to keep your space feeling fresh and timeless.

living room trends

Gold finishes

These finishes have a reputation for being elegant while adding luxury and warmth to any home. This is how they became a popular one of the living room trends because people see it as a timeless move that will improve any space. But is this true?

Well, if you plan to rely only on gold finishes, we have some bad news for you. It will make your living room look unidimensional and transform it into an overall boring space. Using it as the sole metal in a room will make this room seem flat, and be sure it will not age well.

This is why using only gold is one of the worst living room trends, and if you want to make things better, designers advise mixing it with other metals such as chrome, silver, or matte black. Playing with them and beginning will create a more balanced and aesthetic look that we are sure will stand the test of time.

If you are not sure how to do that, we are here to help! Let’s say you have a brushed gold lamp. A great pair for it can be a matte black side table or a chrome coffee table since it can balance the richness of the gold. Applying this method will break up the monotony and will make your gold lamp stand out more than ever.

Random artwork

There are many living room trends, and this one is actually a very popular choice among Americans. People want art in their homes, and they have started buying various pieces and using them as decorations.

This is not a bad thing. Art can completely change what a space looks like, and even more importantly, it can help you add that personal touch to your living room. Unfortunately, this is also the problem with this trend. It’s important to choose art that truly represents you and not all the random pieces you can find in any Ikea or Dollar Store.

If you carefully choose the artwork you plan to buy, you can be sure that it will be powerful and, in the end, offer your living room a “finish” that reflects those who are living in the house. This is what you should aim for.

Now, it’s not like you should always buy expensive art. No. You can also use art that you made yourself or personal photos. Whatever you think adds personality is more than perfect.

Another thing that you should consider is that you should always aim to focus on scale and framing. This is the only way to achieve a polished look, so make sure you choose art that fits your wall space and is thoughtfully framed. This is a move that will elevate the entire room and one of the living room trends that is for sure here to stay.

Reeded, fluted, and tamboured surfaces

Everybody is talking about this right now, and everybody wants such items in their homes. These are some finishes that might look appealing because they add depth, character, and an air of handcraftedness to the space, but fully embracing this trend on a large scale is a big no-no for most interior designers.

The problem is that this texture adds a lot of texture, and maybe someday you will want to change this, and it will be very hard to do so if your living room is based solely on this aesthetic.

This is more than likely one of the living room trends that will disappear in a couple of years, so the best thing you can do is to never go overboard with it. When you integrate this style into your home, aim for a few smaller, easily replaceable pieces. Never commit to larger stuff because it’s expensive and very hard to replace afterward.

What we are trying to say is that a fluted marble fireplace is not an amazing idea. Instead, a few fluted chairs are not that bad. You can replace them more easily if you want to try something new.

Open plans

Until the COVID pandemic, plans were very popular at the top of living room trends. Everyone wanted an open space, and many people already have one. And we can totally understand that. The home will feel more airy, and there will be a lot of space overall.

But something interesting happened. People started to spend more and more time home, and their priorities changed. With the rise of work-from-home, open layouts are starting to lose some of their appeal.

People are now drawn to the traditional layouts with distinct rooms, and if you already have an open space, this is not the ideal situation because right now it is one of the living room trends that is slowly disappearing.

The main disadvantage of open floor plans is the lack of sound insulation. There are fewer walls to stop the sounds from one area to another, and this means anyone staying in the living room will hear what happens in the kitchen.

So, if you are planning to start a renovation, stop before tearing any walls down and think about it for a second. An open space will look modern and will create more space, but this is not the best long-term solution for most households. Be very careful about your decision.

living room trends

White-washed finishes

Among the living room trends that will no longer be here in a couple of years, we can find white-washed finishes, especially the natural white oak furniture and flooring. This is a very popular design trend that people adore because it gives your home a Scandinavian-inspired feel. The living room feels more spacious and brighter.

Unfortunately, as good as it sounds, designers warn us that relying too heavily on white-washed finishes can make your living room look overly specific and always attached to this trend. Maybe you don’t want this in the long run, and you should try to keep things neutral.

You can try a more versatile approach and add a mix of wood tones rather than sticking only to white-washed finishes. This combination offers more depth, and your space will be more adaptable to future changes.

Most Boomers LOVE These 9 Home Decor Trends! https://craftycaptain.com/style/23032655/2023/02/most-boomers-love-these-home-decor-trends/ https://craftycaptain.com/style/23032655/2023/02/most-boomers-love-these-home-decor-trends/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2023 10:57:51 +0000 https://craftycaptain.com/?p=1015162 Do you know which decor trends all baby boomers love?

I’m a baby boomer, and my kids absolutely hate my decor style. They always say how much they love me and my spouse, but the minute I get excited about their words, I hear the word “but,” and then they add, “but your decor style is the worst ever.”

How can they say something like that to me? They don’t care how hard it was for my partner and me to decorate our home. Whether we’re talking about money, ideas, or knowledge, we have to admit that decorating a home is not an easy job.

Unless you plan on doing a complete remodel in a couple of months, you’re stuck with that decor until something breaks and you have to rethink the whole thing. Or at least that’s my case, and I want to say that I love my house decor very much and I’m proud of it.

So if you’re a baby boomer just like me and your kids keep telling you that you should change your decor items, it might be time to show them this article. Without further ado, here are 9 home decor trends that the majority of baby boomers love! Are you one of them? Let’s find out!

1. Patterned wallpaper

I’m crazy about wallpaper, but they hate it. As much as I tried to convince my children that this decor item could turn my home from basic to wow, they simply didn’t buy it.

I don’t want to get my walls dirty and full of stains, so I like to play around with my decor, and patterned wallpaper helps me achieve the look that I want without putting too much effort into it.

All I have to do is choose one that’s peel-off, decide on the pattern and color I like, put it on, and allow it to simply stay there and be fabulous. Do you agree with me on this one?

2. Shag carpets

I know, I know, even I had some mixed feelings about this, but I feel that the majority of baby boomers love this item. A shag carpet is soft, and it feels like walking on clouds each time your feet touch it.

And as much as I like the fact that dirt and bacteria don’t show thanks to the carpet’s fuzzy material, that’s also a bad thing at the same time, because it makes me think that the carpet is already clean and I don’t have to vacuum it. That’s not very good, and I keep telling myself that it really needs a deep cleaning.

This carpet style is outdated and very unfashionable, but it’s so soft that I still want to hold on to it for a little while longer. Maybe I’ll get rid of it soon, just maybe.

3. Gold hardware everywhere

Don’t get me started on this one because I adore gold hardware with all my heart. I even think of how nice it would be to have gold hardware on all my bags and jackets. It would make them a lot prettier.

However, I think that gold hardware looks great in the kitchen and the bathroom because it makes them look luxurious and fancy, just like those that you typically see in fancy hotels. Even the doorknobs in my house are gold since I like them to look spicy and sophisticated.

4. Brick fireplace

Are there any baby boomers who don’t like brick fireplaces? In my opinion, they look very cozy, classy, and stylish. They’re not trendy, but I’m honestly one of those people who doesn’t care about trends and is more focused on utility and durability.

Besides that, a brick fireplace makes me excited about the colder season, which is the perfect time to make a big cup of hot cocoa with a few marshmallows and wear a pair of fuzzy socks to enjoy everything. This decor item is not just beautiful, it also keeps everyone warm day and night.

5. Crystal chandelier

Okay, you have to back me up on this one, because crystal chandeliers are amazing and they make your home look like it’s worth a million bucks. They’re shiny, pretty, and elegant, and they give off the impression that all the home decor items you have are expensive.

Some people might say that they’re outdated and should only exist in places like museums and fancy restaurants, while there are other baby boomers who think that they’re very stylish, and I’m definitely one of them.

6. Tuscan kitchen

I don’t know what other baby boomers think, but when I think of Tuscan kitchens, my mind immediately goes to the old-money aesthetic. They might seem outdated by today’s standards, but I think that they look pretty good and give off the feeling of a warm and neat home.

This decor style was always popular thanks to the comfy and warm feeling it gave, and if we’re being honest, the kitchen is the place where all the members of the family get together and enjoy a delicious meal together, so the room they’re in has to be nice and cozy.

7. Mirrored closet doors

Some people hate it, some people love it, and I’m one of those who actually like this home decor trend. I generally like mirrors because they can play around with light and make my room seem larger than it actually is, which is definitely a pro for me given the fact that I’m quite limited when it comes to square footage.

Besides looking very stylish and put-together, mirrors are also great when you want to take a look at your outfit. I know that maybe there aren’t tons of people who pay a lot of attention to their clothes, but if there are, this decor item is just perfect for that.

8. Carpeted bathrooms

I told you that there are a lot of home decor trends that I, a baby boomer in all her glory, absolutely love, but I have to admit and say that there are also a few that I can’t understand. Who invented them and why?

However, if you think that they’re fun and useful, don’t pay attention to what I’m saying, because everyone’s different. Speaking of that, there were probably many people who wanted to feel cozy in every room of their homes, so they decided to carpet their entire bathrooms.

I get that you’re more likely to feel warm and comfy when you get out of the shower given the fact that you have a soft carpet to put your feet on, but if I really think about it, my guess is that there are more cons than pros.

For instance, water that falls on the ground is going to make a big mess, compared to when it falls directly on the floor and you can simply mop it. And if it gets dirty, you’ll have to spend a lot of time getting it clean and fresh again. For me, it just doesn’t seem to be worth the effort, and I’m better off with floor tiles.

9. Flush-mount lights

I’m not crazy about flush-mount lights, but they get the job done, are affordable, look good, and that’s pretty much it. I want my home to feel cozy, clean, and beautiful, and I like to have a balanced mix of elegance and utility.

For me, these lighting fixtures are just what I need, although I like chandeliers very much. So if you’re looking for something simple, easy to install, that comes in plenty of sizes and colors, and that can also blend perfectly with your decor, you should think of getting a flush-mount light.

I’m very curious to know what you think about these home decor trends, so don’t forget to leave a comment down below! Until next time, don’t forget to take care of your home. Here’s an article that you’ll like: 9 Cheap Decor Upgrades That Will Make Your Guests Say ‘Wow!’!

6 Ways to Achieve That Mid-Century Modern Style https://craftycaptain.com/style/70704551/2023/02/mid-century-modern-style/ https://craftycaptain.com/style/70704551/2023/02/mid-century-modern-style/#respond Thu, 09 Feb 2023 15:42:44 +0000 https://craftycaptain.com/?p=1015042 Would you like to decorate your home in a mid-century modern style?

I absolutely adore the mid-century modern style. It looks so chic, classy, and cozy, but not overwhelming, and it makes me think of pouring a tasty drink into a glass while reading the newspaper on my Eames chair.

This style was very popular a century ago, between 1933 and 1965, and it brought the public plenty of amazing designs from different domains, including architecture, graphic design, interior design, and also industrial design.

There were a lot of designers who span with creativity, leaving the world with gorgeous objects, including Harry Bertoia, George Nelson, and Ray and Charles Eames. For me, the mid-century modern style is iconic and charming, and I love its clean lines, vibrant colors, and geometric shapes and patterns.

If you love this style as much as I do and want to add a few details to your home, you’re in for a treat, because I can teach you how to do it! Without further ado, here are some easy ways to achieve that mid-century modern style you like.

P.S. Get ready to have the most comfortable, stylish, sophisticated, and elegant home ever!

1. Add color

But not any color! If you want to create a polished mid-century look, you need to make your home look refined and mature while still adding a little bit of fun to any elements you have. According to designers, this style is perfect for those who love rich and vibrant pops of color.

You probably know that this fabulous style became very popular after World War II ended, and some people even say that it can be described as a way to make things and people feel happier and more alive again after those sad years of constant conflicts. So say goodbye to gray and black, because it’s time to let them go and allow yellows, reds, and blue shades to enter your house and your life!

Some of the most common choices for colors include different shades of red and pink, earthy tones of beige and brown, greens, such as olive and avocado, yellow mustard, and gold, and let’s not forget about pumpkin orange, which is absolutely wonderful.

But if you’re more of a pastel type of person, you’re lucky, because they’re also a great choice. Think of something natural, pretty, and breezy, like baby blue and dusty pink. These 2 hues look divine together, and they can make you feel very comfy, relaxed, and happy!

Don’t think that you need to paint your entire wall in one of the colors previously mentioned. You can start off with simple things, such as throw pillows and blankets, a small rug, a beautiful canvas or a cushion, or even a soft and cozy couch.

2. Wood

Wood was a staple in people’s houses a century ago and is still one of the most important materials in today’s society too. If you’re looking for a super easy way to add something unique, stylish, and very pretty to your home, don’t say no to warm wood.

This material is excellent for creating amazing pieces such as furniture, floors, and even walls. Cherry, walnut, and mahogany are warm-toned woods that are designers’ favorites when it comes to this style.

These materials are durable, easy to clean, and smooth, and they give off the impression that your home is traditional but very modern at the same time, so they are definitely a worthy investment!

3. Abstract art and design

Is there something that screams more mid-century modern style than some gorgeous abstract designs? I guess not, and if you’re into colorful pieces of art, you’re in for a treat, because this way of decorating is definitely your cup of tea.

Don’t think that you only have to invest in expensive paintings to achieve the look that you want. There are a lot of items to choose from, and they’re suitable for all types of budgets. You can go for artwork, rugs, and even wallpaper to achieve that polished and sophisticated mid-century modern look we’re all crazy about.

You can either choose something colorful and vibrant in nice shades of green, yellow, brown, and blue, or you can go for something more minimalistic in a neutral palette like white, gray, and black.

4. Huge windows… or not

Big windows are a staple in a mid-century modern home, and truth be told, they can make everything better! Just imagine that you just woke up and the sun is getting ready for a new day, hugging your home with its precious rays. Your room seems bigger and breezier, and you’re feeling peaceful and happy.

Or at least, this is how I feel when I catch the light entering my home. But if you aren’t blessed with huge windows, there’s no need to get upset and completely let this idea go. I have a simple and quick DIY idea for you, and I’m pretty sure you’re going to love it.

Of course, you can’t break your walls and build them again, with a bigger space for your windows, but you can purchase a few mirrors to achieve the look that you want.

As you already know, these accessories can catch the light, and they give off the impression that your space is more sophisticated and luxurious, so get ready to go to the nearest store and pick up something that will make you appreciate golden hour even more!

5. White walls

Some people say that white walls are boring and look like a hospital room, while others say they are chic and stylish. I don’t know about you, but I think that they’re absolutely wonderful. They look divine, classic, and overall amazing in any context without adding plenty of details to make them pop.

Speaking of that, after World War II was over, people began painting their walls white in order to allow their decor items to shine and be at the center of attention. We’ve previously said that warm wood pieces are one of the mid-century modern style’s staples, which means that they were so happy about their items and art pieces that they wanted them to be the focal points, and white walls were the perfect canvas for that.

So if you have no idea what colors to paint your walls, stick to the classic white and let your abstract art objects do their thing! Another plus about picking this shade is that you won’t have to waste time thinking about what colors go with your decor items, so it’s efficient!

6. Wallpaper

I feel like wallpaper is everywhere, and it comes in tons and tons of patterns, colors, and varieties! Whether you want to make your home look more stylish, you want to hide some wall stains, or you want to achieve that mid-century modern look, it seems that wallpaper is your bestie no matter what.

I really mean it, it’s everywhere! So how can you make the most of it, you might ask? If you remember what we’ve already discussed during this article, you know that many years ago, people were crazy about bold colors, abstract art, and geometric patterns.

Those are a few details that scream mid-century modern style, and they’re in at the moment, but the best part is that they’re timeless and they look good year after year.

So if you have the courage to add some wallpaper to your walls, you should definitely go for it. Choose something that is bold and abstract, in strong shades and with geometric patterns; add some throw pillows to the room where you put it, and get ready to revive the mid-century style!

You don’t have to install permanent wallpaper if you don’t want it; you can opt for those that are peel-off. This will also make it easier for you to change it when it doesn’t look good and fresh anymore.

Takeaway

Some people might say that it’s only nostalgia talking here, but I don’t think that’s true. Mid-century modern style is awesome, and it will always be one of people’s favorites. It looks so stylish, classic, and timeless that it’s impossible not to want to live in a place that has such great decor.

In conclusion, if this is the style that makes you happy and relaxed, only choose the tips that work for you. Whether you want to add a pop of color, some new art pieces, new furniture, wallpaper, or new lighting fixtures that seem vintage, it’s going to look wonderful! 1. Refinish and paint

If your dresser appears to be worn and deteriorated and isn’t worth being rescued, don’t be afraid to try out a new layer of paint. This will hide most of the flaws the furniture has, plus it is going to be super easy to do it on your own.

But before anything else, take off all the hardware and smooth out any surface blemishes using sandpaper. Wipe away any remaining dust with a medium- to fine-grained sandpaper. After this, we move forward to the next step, which is painting. You can either choose a spray to cover the old paint or the basic method of painting with a brush.

If you go with the second option, make sure to get a high-quality spray paint that will minimize brush strokes and evenly cover any fine carvings or embellishments. In case the paint needs another layer, wait until the first one is completely dry to avoid any ugly drips!

In the picture above, you can see how an old and bland closet can look completely new with only small improvements. Would you try this hack? Tell us in the comments.

2. Ribbon drawer pulls

Built-ins are excellent for organizing but frequently lack personality. Most of them come with drab handles in odd colors and patterns. If you want to try a totally different look, you’re going to love this awesome and easy technique.

For the ribbon drawer pull, you only need four things: a ribbon of your choice, a screwdriver, two flat washers per drawer, and scissors. First of all, remove the old drawer pulls that you want to replace. Then cut a piece of ribbon (in my case, I cut it 12″ long), but this depends on how many pulls you have to change.

Small tip: always cut the pieces longer because they are easier to adjust in case they don’t fit compared to short ones that are hard to work with! After that, tie a knot in a ribbon around the flat washers. I did a pretty good job of keeping the ribbon from fraying over time. Then, on the inside of each drawer, start mounting the ribbon pulls, and by the end of the process, tie the other end of the ribbon as tight as the other one. That’s it! You have the cutest and fanciest drawer pulls ever!

From the entire list of hacks, this one is probably my favorite! It’s super easy to make; it only took me one hour to replace all the handles. This will definitely improve and refresh the look of old hardware. If you’re going to try it, let us know in the comments!

3. Copper and concrete pulls

Concrete and copper are definitely a winning duo that you must try for at least one piece of your household hardware if you want to upgrade its look on a budget. In my case, I really wanted to try out a combination that I saw in different Instagram and TikTok stories lately: copper and gray for bold white hardware. These two elements combined create a really striking, contemporary appearance. They are the ideal do-it-yourselfers for giving your house an industrial chic look!

Don’t worry about drilling because if your drawer already has holes, all you have to do is make new handles the same size as the old ones! All you need for this low-budget project are: one tube of acrylic paint; regular concrete mix; a long stick ice cube tray (available at any hardware store); and a medium-small paint brush.

After mixing the cement powder according to the directions on the box, put it in the ice cube tray, and after 1 minute, insert the heads of the screws. 24 hours later, after the mixture has perfectly dried, carefully pull your new handles outside the tray. If needed, you can sand the edges a bit for a smooth look. Then, using your acrylic paint, divide them in half. Voila! In case you decide to try this idea, be sure to leave us a comment with your opinions.

4. Embellished knobs

We all know what a small piece of decoration can do to a piece of furniture. And if you want to try something new that won’t wreak havoc on your budget, embellished knobs for your media console or any other hardware in the room are a perfect choice. In case you have an old nightstand, a media console, or even a drawer that needs a boost, you can try this hack.

First, you need to know that nobody is going to send you shopping for new knobs, you can absolutely use the ones that you have. In my case, because I like to do a lot of crafty things and I enjoy spending my time on DIY projects, I decided to paint the old knobs for both my cheap-looking Ikea nightstand and my old stand from the living room. I removed all the knobs by simply unscrewing them one by one before painting them. If the color of your hardware is darker, you can choose to paint the knobs yellow.

What you have to remember is that for any type of metal handle or knob that’s made of metal, you must use a painting spray that’s designed for this purpose only. This will adhere better to this material compared to other supplies like acrylic paint. Don’t forget to use an “enamel”-designated spray paint for a glossy, long-lasting finish. Applying the paint in the same manner as the priming is recommended.

5. Maps and leather handles

This idea will be right up your alley if you enjoy traveling just as much as I do. Are you tempted to add some international flair to your room? This project will assist you in giving your dresser a more, shall we say, geographical aesthetic by transforming its dated and plain appearance.

For example, if you bought most of your furniture from Ikea, you know that most of it looks a bit “unfinished.” That’s why a lot of people want to do makeovers or even change the color. But if you don’t like to make a mess or you’re simply not handy, relax, because I have the perfect project for you.

What you’ll need: a large world map, scissors, a good wood adhesive, and a few leather stripes (these will be used as drawer handles, so make sure they have enough material to grip).

Next, make the decoupage by cutting out the map. I wanted the drawer fronts to resemble an entire global map. To make sure this occurred, I took the draws out of the hardware, put them all together face down on the map, and drew a circle around them. After this, glue the pieces of the map onto the drawers carefully to fit the entire surface.

Let them dry completely, and meanwhile, prepare the handles. Cut your leather into pieces. I forgot to mention that I used an old belt, so for six drawers I didn’t need too much of it. I replaced the old handles with the leathery ones, and I fixed them with two small screws each.

Designers Finally Debunked These 6 Decorating Myths https://craftycaptain.com/style/30701241/2023/02/designers-debunked-these-decorating-myths/ https://craftycaptain.com/style/30701241/2023/02/designers-debunked-these-decorating-myths/#respond Wed, 08 Feb 2023 16:32:27 +0000 https://craftycaptain.com/?p=1014981 Do you like to decorate your home? We sure do! This activity is all fun and games until you bump into all of those dos and don’ts. But you know what? The truth is that you can simply ignore them and design your home however you wish.

Yes, there are some mistakes that you should avoid making when you are decorating, but there are also many misconceptions. The most common mistakes you’ve heard about are most likely in the latter category.

People probably told you that you shouldn’t paint a small room in dark colors or that you shouldn’t mix metals, among many other things, just because it is “wrong.”

Here, we collected the most common decorating myths and, with the help of designers, debunked them. Read on if you want to find out more about it!

Small rooms should be painted white

For some reason, this belief still exists, and people are always promoting it. We understand what makes white rooms so popular. They work great if you want to adopt a minimalist style, but they are not the best idea if you want a more daring look for your home.

Another thing that many people like about white rooms is the fact that they look very clean and that they give the illusion of space. Or at least that’s what some people are saying.

In reality, depth perception does not work like this. Color adds depth and appeal, and our eyes naturally gravitate from darker to lighter shades. This is what gives us the ability to estimate the space between two walls and gives us the impression of space.

Also, let’s say you decide to paint a single wall a darker color. Maybe add some designs and patterns. This can help you get some fresh ideas about where to put the furniture and how to decorate the room.

More than that, many contemporary designers even advise covering a whole room in a single dark color to fade out the edges and corners and make the space appear larger.

So, as you can see, you don’t have to be afraid of painting small rooms in darker colors. It is just a myth!

More furniture equals less space

This also applies to large furniture. The idea behind this belief is that if you have a lot of furniture in a room or massive furniture, you will have less space. Well, you might think that this makes sense, right?

Even if this is counterintuitive, a room that is fully furnished will make the space look bigger. This happens because when you buy furniture, you should always think about scale. Scale is everything when we are talking about furniture. You need to learn how to buy the right pieces that can fit in the right places.

Small room, small furniture. Big room, big furniture. These two are the basic rules when you want to choose the best pieces for your home. For example, if you have a pretty small living room, you can buy a bigger couch. Yet, you should keep in mind that the rest of the furniture should be smaller because if you don’t, the room will appear overstuffed.

Keep in mind that when you are arranging your furniture, you should put it in a way that doesn’t interfere with the traffic in the room.

Everything has to match

This is a very common misconception that we always hear: you can’t mix metals like gold and silver, floral patterns with geometric patterns, and so on. But I don’t know if people who say this are aware that the days when we used to match everything evenly and use only monochrome are long gone.

If you really think about it, the fact that you want to do these things differently might add a bit of originality to your home design. Just think about your walls, curtains, and couch all having the same color. Everyone who comes to your house will be bored by your design choices. More than that, it can be tiring for the eye to stare at the same color for long periods of time.

Absolutely, there are some rules that you can follow to ensure that everything will look good. Let’s say that you want to mix floral patterns with plaids. In “the old days,” people were not very good at doing so. But if you are careful enough to keep the patterns at different sizes and for them to not pop up too much in the same space, you should be good.

Artwork should always be hung on the walls

Maybe you are an art lover. And that means you probably have a sizable collection of various art pieces. Or maybe you are an artist and you are always carrying your art with you. Or you just simply enjoy having paintings, sculptures, and other pieces like those around your house, and you bought all of them from Ikea.

Whatever the case, people probably told you that art should always be hung on the walls. If you put a painting in any other place or on any other surface, it is wrong, and you should never do that again.

If you ask me, this is a little bit old-fashioned. Better said, it is out of fashion. Yet, I am aware that some art pieces require specific conditions, and you can’t just keep them wherever you like. Maybe it is not smart to place a very expensive 100-year-old portrait on your chimney.

But in reality, this is usually not the case. You most likely only have a few paintings and figurines from the store. And there are a lot of options and places to put art around the house. You can opt for some shelves or even put it on the floor. The most important thing is for the pieces to match the aesthetic of the room. It is this simple!

Home design and decorating are not for modest homes

Of all the myths we have debunked until now, this is the biggest one. You can absolutely decorate your home and play with home design ideas, even if you have a modest home! This is all about the taste. If you feel like starting a new project and transforming your space, don’t hesitate if you can’t afford the most high-end and expensive pieces. You don’t need those if you want to have a beautiful home.

If we think about all the negative effects the industry has on the environment, it is actually much better if you buy your decorations and furniture from a thrift shop or a yard sale.

Sometimes the challenge of transforming your home into a nicely decorated place is exciting, and this inner drive can motivate you to make the most of it using what you have.

Always follow the latest trends

This is the last misconception on our list. You know, the trends in the field of interior design are always changing, and sometimes you will not be able to keep up with them. And this is not a problem, since you don’t have to follow them.

And to show you that this is true, we can just tell you to take a deep breath and think about all those timeless trends that everybody wishes to have in their homes. Be it the marble countertop in the kitchen or the hardwood floor, there are a lot more out there that wait for you to explore them.

So, you just have to follow your heart and decorate your home as you please, without following the latest design trends. The most important thing is that you like it!

1. Choose folding furniture

One of the golden rules that you must follow when you want to decorate a small space is to measure it to see what furniture might fit. The furniture doesn’t need to be too big or too heavy because that will make the room look even more crowded. That’s why designers recommend looking for folding furniture.

This type of furniture, which can be a bed, a table, a desk, or even a couch, allows you to make the most of your space by folding when not in use. You will be amazed at how, in the blink of an eye, you will free up the space!

In my particular case, because I have a one-wall kitchen, I also removed the door because, when it was opened, it took up a lot of space. I replaced it with the folding doors, and I have to say that looks wonderful. Plus, it’s more practical this way!

2. Benefit from the natural light as much as possible

With the appropriate lighting, a tiny space might actually become visually larger. Therefore, taking full advantage of your windows is mandatory. Choose some light beige curtains that allow the light to come through and give an overall cozy and warm look to your space.

If your room needs more illumination because the windows are not that big, add floor lamps or ceiling chandeliers. Besides looking super fancy, this is a clever way to improve and decorate your space. If you don’t have enough space for a floor and table, choose lighting systems that don’t take up valuable space, such as string lights or pendant lighting.

3. Hide corners

Another hack that helps you decorate your small space is to hide the corners in order to make the room visually appear larger. What’s the magic behind this trick? Covering the edges shifts the focus to another focal point of the room, which can be in the center, where you can place a fancy table or a cozy couch, or to the wall, which you can cover with paintings or a bold colored wallpaper that pops the environment in a very pleasant way.

You can also take advantage of the situation and decorate your space by putting a tall plant in the corner to distract your guests from the area. Plus, plants are adorable, and every home needs some greenery in it!

4. Choose your storage space wisely

There is one thing I learned about small spaces: get creative, but also be wise with the storage space! Because it’s very important to have a storage space, no matter how minimalist you want to go, try to make the most out of your walls in a small room and avoid cluttering the floor space. Many designers said that a lot of people choose “ladder” shelving to both display and store things like books, photo albums, and even house plants.

Ottomans are another fantastic piece of storage furniture that can be used as a chair as well as a storage space. It depends on the size of it; most of them are big enough to help you store linens and other bed accessories that you usually store under the bed.

When you want to decorate or maximize a small space, remember this: instead of stuffing everything into a closet, look for alternative storage solutions.

5. Keep the big furniture on the edges of your room

Most people, when they think about rearranging the look of their home, immediately think about getting rid of the furniture. Well, let me tell you a secret: There is no need to throw away the couch, the bookcase, or even the wardrobe you just bought last year!

Even if your space is limited, strategically placing them can improve the appearance of the room in the blink of an eye. Keep all of your larger furniture against the wall rather than placing it in the center of the floor to maintain the illusion of space in your room.

6. Create more space by just using mirrors

Even though this might sound like a trick our grandparents used back in the day because it’s so old, it still works very well. I personally love creating visual illusions and playing with the look of my home, which is why I tried myself this hack that helped me decorate and improve the look of my living room pretty quickly and with a small budget. I added an oversized mirror that covers the entire wall, and can you guess what the effect is? Besides being jaw-dropping and making all my friends envy me for having such a nice space, it also gave the impression that I hired a designer to do the job for me. You have to try this hack yourself, too!

By reflecting light and, of course, the interior design, the mirror will create the appearance of more space, doubling the effectiveness of your tiny living room.

7. Use vivid colors to trick the eye of the beholder

I love splashes of color that give a fresh look to the environment! They also add an artistic touch to my home. That’s why I tried this painting hack in order to make my room look just a tad taller. I picked the color yellow (bright yellow in my case because the furniture is dark blue) to have a good-looking contrast.

I covered the bottom half of my wall to draw attention when you first came into the room. The other half of the wall should remain a neutral color like the rest of the walls (white or beige, depending on which one you like the most). In between the two, add some nice shelving that can hold either books or small pieces of decoration. For a more impressive effect, add small paintings or a large shaped mirror to the look of the neutral-colored wall above the shelf.

Enjoy renovation!

6 Popular Bathroom Colors to Create a Relaxing Oasis https://craftycaptain.com/style/64045074/2023/02/bathroom-colors-for-a-relaxing-oasis/ https://craftycaptain.com/style/64045074/2023/02/bathroom-colors-for-a-relaxing-oasis/#comments Thu, 02 Feb 2023 15:55:22 +0000 https://craftycaptain.com/?p=1014688 What does your bathroom look like?

When it comes to home decor, people typically think of making their living rooms the center of attention. They invest in comfy and soft couches, elegant and modern coffee tables, beautiful books that look wonderful on that new coffee table they got, curtains to control the light and the ambient, and so many other things.

One thing many people forget is their bathroom. I know, you don’t stay in your bathroom as much as you typically lounge around in your living room, but it’s still a very important area in your home.

For me, my bathroom is my relaxing oasis because it is the place where I do my skincare, put on makeup, and do my hair, so I want to feel energized in the morning, but serene at night.

When I designed my dream bathroom, I made sure that it was everything I wanted it to be: stylish, calm, vibrant, beautiful, modern, and simply fabulous. At first, I was tempted to make it orange, but I discovered that this vibrant shade is more likely to make you hungry, and I didn’t want to feel my stomach growling each time I wanted to brush my teeth.

So I decided to make it white and turquoise, and let me tell you that I feel very happy every morning and every night. There’s something about the way the light reflects in my bathroom, and I can’t get enough of it.

If you’re like me and you want to turn your bathroom into a relaxing oasis, the simplest way to do that is by choosing a color that will make you feel like you’re at a fancy SPA. Are you ready to transform your lavatory? Let’s begin!

1. Sky blue

There’s something soothing about looking at the sea, the ocean, or the sky. Some people say that it’s almost impossible to feel sad when you see how beautiful nature is, so if you want to bring the outside feelings in, you need some blue accents in your life.

If you want to feel relaxed and happy every time you enter your bathroom, I think painting your walls in a beautiful sky-blue shade will do wonders for your mind. And if you have white furniture, get ready to be impressed, because everything will look like it’s straight out of a fairytale!

I think that the combination of white and blue is so dreamy, elegant, and charming—definitely one of my favorites!

2. Dusty jade

Do you like spending time in nature? I don’t know about you, but each time I see something green, I immediately think of something pretty and relaxing. If you want to feel like you’re in a SPA, ready to get the most amazing treatment ever, but you don’t have the budget for it, I can teach you how to do that at home!

First things first, you have to start off by painting your bathroom a light shade of green. Then, you can add a few scented candles to your vanity to make the room smell nice, run a bubble bath or a steamy shower, and if you’re feeling extra fancy, you can add a piece of eucalyptus to your shower to make everything seem fresh. Not only is this a great physical feature for your bathroom, but it’s also going to do wonders for your health.

PS: This color looks amazing paired with some white and silver accents! Try out this combination because you’re not going to be disappointed!

3. Light gray

Not many people are fans of light gray bathrooms, but they look absolutely divine, especially if you know what to pair them with. For instance, if you want your bathroom to look stylish and modern but also very soothing, you should combine gray with some wood or earthy tones for a more natural look, but don’t forget to add a few taupe accents to make everything look sophisticated and fabulous.

If you like marble, it pairs wonderfully with the chromatic scheme previously mentioned. We know that it’s not that budget-friendly, but there are tons of options on Amazon on how you can DIY the look, such as wallpaper that gives off the impression you have real marble in your bathroom.

The contrast will be unbelievable, and if you make a clay detox face mask and light a scented candle, your bathroom will be your go-to place each time you need a couple of minutes just for yourself.

4. Tan and eggshell white tones

I don’t know what your thoughts are when it comes to chromatic palettes (make sure you leave a comment down below and tell me), but for me, neutral-painted bathrooms are always a good idea. They’re just so stylish, relaxing, and pretty that each time I see one, I can’t help but admire it for a couple of seconds.

I know that I might sound a bit weird saying that I admire bathrooms, but really, they’re the place I start my morning routine and end my night routine, so they’re very important.

However, let’s go back to this color palette because I’m already rambling: Off-white shades that are paired with wood and tan hues create a stunning contrast that is cozy and rustic but very modern, like a Parisian-chic aesthetic, which you probably like very much. If you have no idea how to paint your bathroom, you won’t go wrong with a tan shade.

5. Navy blue

I know that is probably hard to believe, but if you know the proper way to combine navy blue with powder white and golden accents, you’ll have the most gorgeous bathroom ever! I’m speaking elegance, sophistication, relaxation, and everything else you want. Trust me, this is one of the best combinations ever, and it gives off the feeling that you’re in the bathroom of a very fancy hotel.

So how can you achieve this amazing look for less? Well, things are pretty simple, and all you have to do is accessorize. You can purchase some deep blue backsplash that will turn your bathroom into a relaxing oasis thanks to its soothing and versatile properties.

Then, add a light fixture that has gold accents, and if your furniture is white, then you’re good to go. If you’re looking for a way to spice up your whole bathroom, you can add a small vase of white flowers to your vanity. Not only will it look very pretty, but it will also create a very natural vibe, an image that seems like it’s straight out of a magazine.

6. White

Never underestimate the power of a white bathroom! Some people say that a white room might give off the feeling of a hospital room, but that’s not true, especially if you know what hue to use.

A clean white is just amazing for creating a chic and luxurious bathroom that looks relaxing and cozy but is also very stylish at the same time. You can play around with other colors and textures to give it more life, such as beige baskets that are made of straw or golden light fixtures that will create a very stylish and modern look.

This style is also great if you love the Parisian chic aesthetic. You can add some golden little statuettes to make something pretty and shiny, or you can add some colorful flowers to make everything look charming and more vibrant.
